Treating Anxiety & Depression with CranioSacral Therapy
By Linda Wells, M.Ed, RMT
Is Anxiety or Depression interfering with your ability to fully enjoy your life? While there are many approaches to overcoming these disorders, CranioSacral Therapy may be your answer. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, non-medicative therapy that uses light touch to bring your central nervous system back into balance. It has been used successfully to treat both anxiety and depression.
The CranioSacral System consists of the brain, spinal cord, membranes and fluid within it. The fluid has a rhythm all it’s own, like your heartbeat or pulse. When there is a disruption in the system, dysfunction can occur.
A disruption means that the cerebral spinal fluid is not flowing to it’s maximum potential. It can be caused by an accident, such as a blow to the head or a fall. A disruption can also occur from any sort of repeated physical or emotional stress, chemical toxicity (from medications, for example), or environmental toxicity.
To correct a disruption, your therapist will begin by gently touching various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system. The therapist is able to locate areas of weak fluid flow or limited tissue motion and help to increase the viability of the system.
Alternatively, the western medical model treats anxiety and depression in a very different way. According to Daniel Carlot, Assistent Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Author of the book, Unhinged: The Trouble With Psychiatry, only about 1 in 10 psychiatrists are really doing psychotherapy on a regular basis. That is, offering talk therapy to help relieve the problem. Most psychiatrists conduct interviews with the patient, make a diagnosis using the DSM (the official diagnostic manual for the psychiatric disorders of the American Psychiatric Association), and match medications with the diagnosis. Patients are medicated instead of cured.
Although CranioSacral Therapists are certainly not psychotherapists, they are trained to release restrictions in the body. Emotions are stored within our tissues and are often released along with physical restrictions. In that way, CST can help to address the root causes of anxiety and depression without the use of medications. Additionally, CST calms the central nervous system, allowing the body and mind to be stronger and more resilient.
In general, CranioSacral Therapy is very relaxing and people report feeling exceptionally grounded immediately after a session. Many people suffering from depression report feeling at least somewhat better after just one session. However, the number of treatments needed to completely resolve a condition varies from just one up to three or more a week over the course of several weeks. Your individual situation and the length of time you have been experiencing your symptoms will determine how quickly you respond to the treatment and how long the results last.
